Autonomous mobility services mark the beginning of a new chapter for operators. New roles are emerging, established workflows are evolving, and teams are taking responsibility for technologies that are fundamentally transforming public transportation. 

MOIA's AD Academy supports this transition with hands-on training and learning programs. It helps operator teams build the competencies required to operate autonomous mobility services safely and efficiently.

Building Competencies for Autonomous Operations

As the transition to autonomous mobility progresses, roles and responsibilities within mobility operations continue to evolve. In addition to traditional functions in control centers, fleet management, and vehicle service, areas such as fleet supervision, incident management, meaning the structured handling of technical disruptions or safety-related incidents, and collaboration between humans and autonomous systems are becoming increasingly important.

Operators need to prepare their teams for new processes, safety requirements, and operational procedures. Across the various functions involved in operating an autonomous mobility service, employees need in-depth expertise and practical experience in working with autonomous systems. At the same time, these competencies must be established across the organization and embedded sustainably in processes and teams. 

Working closely with operators, the MOIA AD Academy defines new roles and responsibilities, prepares employees for their future tasks, and provides the operational and safety knowledge required for autonomous mobility services. 

Certifications, hands-on training, operational observation phases, and continuous learning opportunities help embed these new competencies within organizations. 

The AD Academy is part of MOIA's Operator Enablement Services and supports operators in developing this expertise in a structured way. Its training and learning programs are based on practical experience gained from building and operating autonomous mobility services and are designed around the requirements of day-to-day operations.

The MOIA AD Academy Shares Knowledge Across the Entire Value Chain 

The MOIA AD Academy supports employees in the various roles required to operate autonomous mobility services. These include operational positions such as Hub Manager, Fleet Manager, and Fleet Control Operator, as well as service technicians, Safety Drivers for autonomous vehicles, and a wide range of technical roles. 

A particular focus is placed on the training of Safety Drivers. During the introduction and testing phases of autonomous mobility services, Safety Drivers play a key operational role by helping ensure the safe deployment of autonomous vehicles in real-world traffic environments.  

The AD Academy provides the knowledge they need, prepares them for a wide variety of operational scenarios, and equips them for their day-to-day responsibilities.

With the MOIA AD Academy, we build on that foundation and prepare the operator’s professionals for new responsibilities in the future-oriented field of autonomous mobility," says Theresa. 

The various training programs combine existing operational experience with new knowledge about autonomous systems, processes, and responsibilities. This enables operators to develop competencies they can apply immediately in their daily operations while embedding them within their organizations long-term.

Safety as a Core Element of the Training Programs

Safety is a fundamental prerequisite for operating autonomous mobility services and is a core element of every AD Academy training program. The courses provide employees with the knowledge they need to understand safety-critical processes and prepare them to respond to a wide range of operational situations. This includes incident handling, event documentation, and the application of established safety procedures. 

In addition, the AD Academy works with other key stakeholders across the mobility ecosystem by training fire departments, emergency medical services, and other first responders.  

These programs familiarize emergency personnel with the specific characteristics of autonomous vehicles while promoting a shared understanding of procedures, responsibilities, and collaboration during emergency situations.
